OAKLAND Black FATHERS COALITION

Uniting Fathers. Strengthening Families. Leading Change.

The Oakland Black Fathers Coalition (OBFC) is a citywide movement powered by Dads Evoking Change. We bring together Black fathers, fatherhood groups, community leaders, and everyday dads to build collective power and reshape the systems that impact our children and neighborhoods. This is a space where Black fathers are visible, connected, and leading with purpose.

Our Mission

The Oakland Black Fathers Coalition mobilizes and equips Black fathers to lead in their families, schools, and communities. Through civic engagement, cultural connection, and collective advocacy, we build a united fatherhood movement where Black fathers are supported and empowered to shape the future of Oakland’s youth.

Our Vision

We envision an Oakland where Black fathers stand together under a unified movement, shaping policy, nurturing youth, and strengthening education and justice systems. OBFC is building a thriving, connected network of Black men driving generational change and belonging across the city..

What We Do

Civic Engagement and Advocacy

We organize fathers to show up in city hall, school board meetings, and public decision-making spaces. Our presence shifts policy and narrative, ensuring systems reflect the lived experience of Black families.

Community and Cultural Connection

We host father-child gatherings, and cultural events that strengthen bonds, build community, and bring joy and healing into the lives of fathers and their children.

School Leadership

We mobilize fathers across OUSD to lead in PTAs, serve as father representatives on school campuses, and engage directly with school decision-makers. When fathers show up in schools, children thrive.

Why Oakland Fathers Need This Now

Families across Oakland are navigating deep challenges: inequitable schools, housing instability, community violence, and systems that rarely reflect the voices of fathers. OBFC answers that moment with unity, visibility, and leadership. With seed support from the Akonadi Foundation, we are building a citywide network rooted in healing, culture, and collective fatherhood power.

Our 10 Core Principles

Our work is grounded in a shared commitment to leadership, unity, visibility, family, culture, accountability, youth development, healing, advocacy, and legacy building. These principles guide how we show up for our children and each other every day.
