A Day at the Lake
An afternoon built for dads and kids
Baba & Me is Dads Evoking Change’s annual Father’s Day gathering. We bring fathers, caregivers, and children to Lake Merritt for an afternoon of reading, music, movement, and play. It’s free, it’s outdoor, and there’s no RSVP – just show up.
The day is built around a simple idea: fathers belong at the center of family life, and they deserve communities that celebrate them. We center Black and Brown fathers, and we welcome every family.
What We Offer
What’s happening
Activities run throughout the afternoon. Drop in, move between them, and stay as long as you like.
Baba’s Reading Circle
Our monthly early literacy program comes outside for Father’s Day. Storytime, books, and the 81st Avenue Mobile Library bringing books for every family to take home.
Destiny Arts
A live martial arts demonstration and a family dance activity. Kids and dads moving together.
Oakland Black Men Chess League
Light chess lessons and a chance to sit at the board with mentors who play the game.
Black Girls Code
A photo collage activity table for the kids.
Photo Booth & Frame-Making
Take a Father’s Day portrait, then build your own frame to carry it home.
Sack Races & Tug of War
Classic dad-and-kid games. Dads vs. kids – and the kids always win.
Bounce House
Because what is a family afternoon without one.
Closing Stroller Walk
At 1:30, families with strollers gather with Oakland Stroller Dads for a community walk along the Lake Merritt path.
Catered Lunch
A catered lunch provided on site, while supplies last.
